Further proof that the OMEGA watches associated with the first lunar landing continue to inspire a sense of awe.
A solid gold commemorative Speedmaster, given to Gemini 10 and Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins, has sold at Heritage Auctions in the USA for 765,000 US dollars all in.
To celebrate the success of the Apollo 11 mission and the first watch worn on the moon, OMEGA produced a limited series of solid gold Speedmaster timepieces (reference BA145.022-69), the first thirty of which were given as gifts to those who made the moon landing possible.
A description that certainly applies to Apollo 11’s Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, who received Speedmaster #19. The watch now in the possession of a passionate collector.
Adding to the value of the Speedmaster is the personally engraved caseback, with the name of the astronaut, his missions – and a poetic tribute to the spirit of space exploration.
